Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plants
Fisia Italimpianti has been active in the urban wastewater treatment sector since the early 1970s, delivering plants that support industrial infrastructure as well as facilities for the purification of blackwater prior to discharge into natural bodies of water.
In recent years, the company has strengthened its leadership in the sector through major national and international projects.
These include:
- The wastewater treatment plant for the city of Vicenza
- The completion of the Riachuelo megaproject in Buenos Aires, which involves the pretreatment of the Argentine capital’s urban wastewater
The plants built and under construction by Fisia Italimpianti serve a total of 9.2 million population equivalents, with a total treatment capacity of 606 million m³/day of wastewater. Through an integrated approach and the use of advanced technologies, Fisia Italimpianti ensures solutions that are sustainable, efficient, and compliant with the most rigorous environmental standards.
Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plants
Since the 1960s, Fisia Italimpianti has built solid expertise in the engineering and implementation of industrial wastewater treatment plants, operating in highly complex sectors such as rolling mills, steelworks, ports, and various mechanical processing industries.
Over the course of its operations, the company has treated more than 1,200,000 m³ of water per day, contributing to both the environmental and operational sustainability of numerous facilities worldwide.
To date, over 45 plants have been delivered across different countries, supporting local economic development while strictly complying with international environmental regulations. Fisia Italimpianti's technically driven, quality-oriented approach makes it a reliable partner for industry, capable of combining efficiency, innovation, and environmental care.
All desalination processes produce water that requires a final remineralization treatment before being suitable for human consumption. This crucial step serves to:
- Restore an optimal balance of mineral salts, providing the water with appropriate alkalinity, hardness, and trace elements, so that it meets international drinking water standards.
- Ensure the chemical stability of the water during distribution, preventing corrosive effects in the transport system (water mains).
Fisia Italimpianti has designed and built over 10 major water remineralization facilities serving desalination systems, with a total drinking water production capacity exceeding 3,400,000 m³/day.
To remineralize the distillate from desalination plants, Fisia Italimpianti employs two main technologies:
- Limestone filter systems (calcium carbonate filtration)
- Limewater injection systems
These processes ensure a final product that is safe, palatable, and fully compliant with the highest international standards for domestic and human use.
Fisia Italimpianti has successfully designed and built more than 10 large-scale drinking water treatment plants, with a combined capacity of approximately 1,000,000 m³/day of potable water.
Thanks to its expertise, Fisia Italimpianti can handle water treatment from a wide range of natural sources, including surface waters (streams, rivers, lakes) and groundwaters (wells and aquifers).
The initial quality of the raw water depends on its origin and determines the specific chemical and physical characteristics to be treated. Accordingly, the potabilization process is tailored to ensure full compliance with international health and safety standards.
Drinking Water Treatment Process Stages
Water treatment generally involves a multi-stage purification process, each phase crucial for removing impurities and pathogens:
- Coagulation – Addition of coagulants to aggregate suspended particles
- Flocculation – Formation of larger, easily separable flocs
- Sedimentation – Removal of solids through settling
- Filtration – Passing water through filter beds to eliminate residual particles
- Disinfection – Final elimination of bacteria and viruses using chemical agents or UV light
- Sludge Line – Treatment of sludge generated by the treatment stages and refinement of the water line
