The Mediterranean is growing thirstier
The context in which these initiatives are being developed is becoming increasingly complex. The Mediterranean is now recognised as one of the world's climate hotspots, an area where the effects of climate change are occurring with greater intensity and at a faster pace.

Here, water deficits in soils and aquifers tend to accumulate over time, making even seasonal rainfall insufficient to restore the system's balance. Across the European Union, around one third of the territory experiences water scarcity every year, with a worsening trend that, according to current analyses, is unlikely to be reversed by 2030.
The causes of a structural crisis
The Mediterranean water crisis is not the result of a single factor, but of a combination of dynamics that reinforce one another. Climate change is reducing the natural availability of water, while demand continues to increase. At the same time, infrastructure is not always adequate: in many countries, a significant share of water is lost through distribution networks, further aggravating the imbalance.
Natural ecosystems, which play a fundamental role in regulating the water cycle, are also under increasing pressure. The result is a fragile system in which water availability can no longer keep pace with consumption.
